The “Magic Hour”

Ahhh…Summer has finally arrived, I thought it would never get here! With all the sunshine we have been having, and all of the wildlife actively engaged in raising young, it is the prime time to be outside taking it all in.

Photographers know that the best light comes very early in the morning in Summer…VERY early! Fantastic sunrises are always a possibility as well. I was up at 4:00am this past weekend ready to capture that beautiful morning light, and nature did not let me down. The light in “The Magic Hour”, as photographers often refer to it as, is the golden light found around the early part of sunrise, and late into sunset. Of course you don’t always get this great light, but when you do, it can make all the difference in your photographs, and make them really come alive.

As I was walking in the field in the image to the left as the sun was just coming up, a thick foggy mist blanketed the ground and made for a spectacular scene. I knew it was going to be a great morning at that point. I heard birds singing all around me, but had yet to see them. I was all alone, except for the wildlife that called this beautiful place home. This, is what nature photography is all about. When you experience something so powerful, so magical, it changes you as a person. It becomes part of you.
