Click of the Week – Blackbirds

Ahhh yes, the Red-winged Blackbirds are busy frolicking among the cat-tails, and signalling the first signs of Spring are indeed here. Bird activity is slowly picking up as the migrants make their way North. The next few weeks should really start to produce large numbers of songbirds, and it will be a nice change to photograph wildlife without the dreary skies that are common between the transition from Winter to Spring.

I spent nearly a half hour with the bird, waiting for just the right combination of light, and gesture on the birds part to create this image I pre-visualized. I set up for just the right angle on the cat-tail to give me a nice creamy background and waited for the magic to happen.

This image was photographed with a Canon 1D Mk IV, 500mm f/4 lens, ISO 400, f/4, 1/1600sec., AI Servo with the camera in portrait position and the auto-focus point above, and slightly right of center to nail sharp focus on the eye.
